Gabriel “koi” Interview

“The Day I Married a Dead Poet” by Gabriel Koi

Who are you?

I am a visual artist working mostly with digital art in the fields of 3D and generative art, but also working with filmmaking since the beginning. I was born in 1999 in Brazil and am based in São Paulo, growing up as a kid with computers and inside the cyber-internet culture.

When did you start making art?

Since the early days I was always creating. I was never good enough to draw or play instruments, even though my father was a musician, but I always created stories in my head and played with my toys being characters of these stories. Video games were a huge influence on me to start making art, coming from PC gaming, I started to learn art software.

What inspires your artwork?

The will to materialize what my head see. Video games, spiritual visions, unknown beings, sincere energy.

What programs do you use to create?

I use mostly to 3D: Cinema 4D and Zbrush. For the generative art I use TouchDesigner. I always use Photoshop and After effects to do the final retouches. I always search for less-known softwares to compose with my work, like “Aphophysys”, Audacity to glitch and small things on Processing.

What is your favorite part about creating art?

When I feel like I’m meditating, when I don’t see the time passing. When I am being honest with myself and managing to materialize what my mind is seeing.

What do you want the viewer to feel when they look at your art?

I want to catch the first attention and with this opportunity, give a moment of awakening with the activation of the work. My pieces are ACTIVATORS.

Do you have any creations that are your favorite?

I am very happy with my recent works. I am getting to do what I want. I love to materialize to the screen my dreams and oneiric textures.

What adds value to your art?

I believe that the process is a lot of work, not only on a technical level, but conceptually as well. The care to the piece adds value to it. I have a unique identity that was built in a natural way. It increases the value of my work. I really try to transform my interpretations of reality and cyber-reality into pieces of art.

What projects are you currently working on?

I have some new ideas for pieces, mostly of dream materializations. Utopic ideas materializations to pieces. I have my side-project of generative art called “The Generative Koi”, I am doing some visual loops there. And I’m building the last three pieces of “ATMOSPHERES” series. But I am in no hurry. I hate doing things in a hurry.
